CBDT Extends Tax Audit & ITR Due Dates for AY 2026-27
Big Relief for Taxpayers and Tax Professionals
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of the due dates for Tax Audit Reports and Income Tax Returns for Assessment Year 2026-27.
The decision provides additional time to taxpayers, businesses and tax professionals who are required to get their accounts audited under the Income-tax Act.
New Due Dates at a Glance
Tax Audit Report
Earlier Due Date-30 sep. 2026
Extendend Due Date-21 Oct. 2026
ITR- Tax Audit Cases
Earlier Due Date-31 Oct. 2026
Extendend Due Date-21 Nov. 2026
The extension gives an additional 21 days for furnishing the Tax Audit Report and moves the corresponding ITR deadline by 21 days.
What Has Changed?
For taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited under the Income-tax Act, the specified date for furnishing the Tax Audit Report has been extended from:
30 September 2026 → 21 October 2026
Similarly, the due date for furnishing the corresponding Income Tax Return has been extended from:
31 October 2026 → 21 November 2026
This applies to the relevant audit cases for AY 2026-27 (FY 2025-26).
Why Is This Extension Important?
September is one of the busiest periods for Chartered Accountants, businesses and taxpayers because of multiple tax and compliance requirements.
The additional time can help professionals complete:
-Books of accounts finalisation
-GST & turnover reconciliation
-TDS reconciliation
-AIS & Form 26AS verification
-Balance Sheet & P&L finalisation
-Tax Audit Report & Form 3CD
-Tax computation
-ITR preparation & filing.
The extension therefore provides additional time to complete the audit process and related income-tax compliance.
What Should Taxpayers Do Now?
Although the deadline has been extended, taxpayers should not wait until the last date.
Businesses should use the additional time to complete their accounting and tax records, resolve reconciliation differences and provide the required information to their Chartered Accountant.
For tax professionals, the additional period can be used to complete pending audits while maintaining proper documentation and review procedures.
Important: Extension Is Not the Same as Cancellation of Compliance
The extension only changes the due dates.
Taxpayers who are otherwise required to maintain books, obtain a tax audit or furnish an Income Tax Return must continue to comply with the applicable provisions of the Income-tax law.
Therefore, the extension should be treated as additional compliance time, not as a relaxation from the underlying audit or return-filing requirement.
What About ICAI?
The ICAI has been actively issuing tax-audit-related guidance and conducting programmes for members, including a Direct Taxes Committee webinar on Tax Audit – Pitfalls & Precautions held on 24 September 2026.
The actual change in the statutory due dates, however, comes from the CBDT, not ICAI.
Final Takeaway
For AY 2026-27, the revised timeline for applicable tax-audit cases is:
Tax Audit Report: 21 October 2026 Income Tax Return: 21 November 2026
The extension gives taxpayers and professionals additional time to complete the audit and return-filing process properly.
However, with several compliances still pending, it is advisable to use this additional time for reconciliation, review and error-free filing rather than waiting for the last date.
